Brighton Secondary School 21st Century Learning Centre
Brighton, South Australia
Year of completion:
Four years of consultancy work have culminated in the completion of a new 21st Century Learning Centre, Music Recital Hall and refurbished Science laboratories at Brighton Secondary School. With additional enrolments of 250 students and laptops issued to all Year 9–12 students in 2014, this new development has significantly transformed the learning environment of the entire 1400 student campus.
The 21st Century Learning Centre provides an educational experience where students are more engaged in a ‘community of learners’, characterised by inclusive and innovative leadership, personalised learning, flexible pedagogy and an ICT rich environment. The ‘One to One’ learning programs guide students to be digitally literate, socially empowered, able to multi-task and always remain one click away from knowledge. The 21st Century Learning Centre creates a new two level interactive building environment, consisting of a new ‘wireless’ library, one-stop-shop Student Services, canteen/café and a single level of specialist and general learning areas.
In addition, new Staff Room facilities will also provide support for professional development. The new building envelope continues the theme of high interaction by incorporating active ESD elements, including PV cells and a central atrium with motorised louvers to allow natural ventilation during optimum climatic conditions. Supporting Brighton’s excellent reputation for music, the new Recital Hall is an adjunct to the existing Performing Arts Centre and provides a 400 seat venue with new amenities. Refurbishment of existing science and GLAs to provide more flexible, contemporary learning spaces completes the transformation.
